Geonics 2007
International conference held on the occasion of 25 yers from the founding of the Institute
The conference Geonics 2007 is one of activities which commemorate 25 years of the existence of an independent institute of the Academy of Sciences CR in Ostrava. The history of the Institute is dated from 1982, when the independent Mining Institute of the Czechoslowak Academy of Sciences in Ostrava was founded. This founding was preceded by development of the institution as an Ostrava branch of the Institute of Geology and Geotechnics CSAS in Prague from 1978. After 1989 and the following changes in both, society and Academy, the institute extended its interests to a more general investigation of processes in the Earth crust, especially processes induced by human activities. It means that the present institute is oriented not only to mining of raw materials, but also to underground reposition of waste materials, new geotechnologies etc. This is accompanied by development of necessary methods for study of geomaterials and their reaction with the environment, solution to problems in geomechanics and geophysics, e.g. research in stability of the underground constructions, reinforcement of rock mass, construction of underground openings, transport and isolation of contaminants, study of seismicity. An important development has been reached in the fields of mathematicall modelling and material disintegration using non-classical water jet disintegration methods.
Research interests of the institute involve also environmental geography pursued at the Brno branch of the institute. In 1993, the new broader and highly interdisciplinary scope of the institute was stressed by the change of the name of the institute, which was renamed as the Institute of Geonics AS CR.
