The paper describes process of switching between two memory states in hippocampus. Analysis in high temporal resolution showed that after stimulus change, the original and new memory often compete before the later one gets stabilized. The study identifies hippocampal theta oscillation as pacemaker controlling this process. It showes that neuronal patterns of activity (believed to be neuronal substrates of memory) are expressed in quantal units or packets, once every cca 125 miliseconds. This allows the memory system to constantly reprocess the incoming stimuli and express the proper activity pattern in order to facilitate error correction and enhance discriminative power in the presence of weak and ambiguous input cues.
