Jarmila Panevová finished her studies of Czech and Russian at the Faculty of Philosphy, Charles University in Prague (FP in the sequal) in 1961. During her studies she was interested in the new interdisciplinary domain of mathematical linguistics; her diploma thesis was devoted to this subject. After her studies she started her work as a researcher and senior researcher at the university laboratory for machine translation and mathematical linguistics, affiliated to the FP and later at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (FMP in the sequel) of the same University. Since 1990 she has been working in the new established Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics at FMP. From 1990 till the end of 2007 she was the vice-director of this Institute.
She defended her thesis for the CSc. degree in 1969 at the FP, in 1989 she recieved the DrSc degree on the basis of her monograph “Forms and functions in the structure of Czech sentence” published in 1980. In 1992 she became an assistant professor and in 1995 professor of general linguistics of Charles University. She teaches general linguistics, syntax of contemporary Czech and academic writings partly at the FMP, partly at FP. She published one monograph in Academia Publ. House, she is a co-author of four other books (published partially abroad) and of chapters in three handbooks. In her bibliography there are approx. 230 items (scientific papers in journals and proceedings).
In 1990–1999 she was the chairperson of the Linguistic Association of Czech Republic, in 1990–1993 she was a member of the Council of Scientific Associations at AV. In 1990–1994 she was a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Since 2003 she has participated at the activities of the Grant Agency of Czech Republic, she was a member of its subcomission Philology, Literary science (2003–2009), since 2004 till 2006 she chaired this subcomission. In 2003–2006 she was a member of its committee for humanities. She is a member of the International Comission.for Grammatical Structure of Slavonic Languages at International Slavonic Committee (since 1993), she has been elected as its chairperson (in 2003–2008).
