prof. RNDr. Jan Zima, DrSc.

 

(born in 1952 Prague)


prof. RNDr. Jan Zima, DrSc. J. Zima graduated in biology from the Faculty of Science of Charles University in 1975. In 1996 he defended a doctoral thesis (DSc.) at the Academy of Sciences. In 1997 he habilitated at the Faculty of Science of Charles University and in 2004 he was appointed professor in zoology at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University. He worked in various institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. From 2000 to 2009 he was the director of the Institute of Vertebrate Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

His research interest is focused on comparative and evolutionary cytogenetics, systematics and phylogeny of mammals and other vertebrates. He has published 150 original scientific papers (97 in journals kept in the ISI databases), 29 monographs, books (or chapters in books) and edited proceedings. He has been principal investigator of a number of scientific grant projects, of which eight international, including projects of the EU framework programmes.

He gives regular lectures at the Faculties of Science of Charles University and Masaryk University. He has supervised 25 MSc. and PhD. theses. He is a member of scientific councils of the Faculty of Science of University of South Bohemia, of Charles University, of Masaryk University and a member of six boards for doctoral studies. He worked in the committees of the Czech Science Foundation, the Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and of several foreign grant agencies. He is a member of the editorial boards of four international journals and the editor in chief of the journal Folia Zoologica.
