Applied mathematics

The research objective is mathematical modelling and computer simulation focused mainly on processes in the rock mass. The aim is to attack increasingly complex phenomena including multiscale and coupled (multiphysics) problems. The modelling procedure has several phases, from the mathematical description of the problem to the delivery of the computed physical quantities and their interpretation. The following phases are of particular research interest.

Mathematical formulation of models describing the behaviour of real objects like rock mass affected by human activities, nuclear waste disposal sites during their long-term existence or suspension bridges exposed to the wind. The models are formulated as complex partial differential equations that are analyzed numerically, basically by the finite element (FE) method.

Efficient numerical solution is necessary for realization of large-scale complex (mostly 3D) models. Since the solution of large linear and non-linear systems, arising from the FE discretization, is computationally the most demanding phase, special effort is devoted to novel (iterative) methods and algorithms.
