20th Anniversary of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic has been observing the 20th anniversary of its origin for the past 12 months. The establishment of the Academy was necessitated by the division of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993. It so happens that the Czech Academy has the distinction of being one day “older” than the Czech Republic, which also became a separate country on January 1, 1993.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Academy of Sciences, the most important Czech scientific institution, there was a press conference held in the Prague headquarters. The history of the ASCR with an emphasis on its essential role in society, breakthrough moments and main developmental stages was at first raised by its current president, Professor Jiří Drahoš. Later it was commemorated by his three predecessors in the leading post of the ASCR – Professor Rudolf Zahradník, Professor Helena Illnerová and Professor Václav Pačes. In the subsequent discussion, Professor Drahoš also outlined the nearest goals of the ASCR with regards to its further development and improvement of its activities. At the end of the meeting with journalists, key participants ceremonially baptized the new publication Stars of the Scientific Heavens.
