Ropalopus varini (Bedel, 1870), decades known under name Ropalopus spinicornis (Abeille de Perrin, 1869), is a rare representative of European insect fauna. In Central Europe it primarily occurs in relict oak forests growing on extremely exposed slopes of river valleys. The species develops in many Quercus species. However, in Central Europe the most frequently recorded host is Quercus petraea. The biology of this species has been described in detail by Vlasak and Rejzek [❖] and some details from this paper are presented in the following page devoted to R. varini biology.

Body length:7 - 14 mm
Life cycle:1 - 2 years
Adults in:May - July
Host plant:polyphagous in deciduous trees (Quercus, Corylus, Castanea, Juglans, Malus, Prunus, Rosa etc.)
Distribution:Europe except North

The beetles in these picture were reared from larvae found in thin oak twigs collected near Karlova Ves and Srbsko in Central Bohemia (Czech Republic).
