Institute characteristics
- 1978: On January 1, a detached workplace of the Mining Institute (MI) of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (CSAS) in Prague was established in Ostrava.
- 1979: On January 1, the detached workplace of the MI in Ostrava was set up a branch of the MI in Ostrava. The MI was later renamed to the Institute of Geology and Geotechnics (IGG) of the CSAS and the branch of the MI in Ostrava became a mining sector of the IGG.
- 1982: With effect from July 1, a separate Mining Institute of the CSAS in Ostrava (MI Ostrava) was established from the mining sector of the IGG by a resolution of the Presidium of the CSAS.
- 1983: Construction of a new building of the MI Ostrava was started in Ostrava-Poruba.
- 1987: The official handover of the new building took place on October 9 with participation of the Chairman of the CSAS, prof. Josef Říman.
- 1990: New political conditions initiated systematic transformation of the CSAS and its workplaces. During this transformation, the workplace in Brno with a focus on the environmental geography was assigned to the MI Ostrava.
- 1992: The CSAS was dissolved on December 31. On the same day, the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) has been established.
- 1993: The transformation of the Institute was accomplished. On April 1, the MI Ostrava was renamed to the Institute of Geonics of the CAS.
- 2007: On January 1, the legal form of the Institute of Geonics of the CAS has been changed from a state-subsidized organization to a public research institution.
