Nobel Prize awarded discoveries

Nobel Prize in Physics 1997
At room temperature atoms and molecules in the air move about at breakneck speed. In order for them to be studied, they need to be slowed down or chilled.

During the 1980s Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his co-laureates developed methods of using laser light to cool gases and keeping the chilled atoms floating or captured in different kinds of “atom traps”. Individual atoms could then be studied with very great accuracy and their inner structure could be determined. This method has increased our knowledge of the interplay between radiation and matter.

Truth, Trust and Hope

Nobel Prize Summit 2023
We live in a world of interconnected crises: emerging pandemics and health emergencies, inflationary and monetary pressures, war, climate change and increased stresses on society and the environment. The volume, velocity and reach of disinformation in today’s world weaken public deliberation and undermine trust in scientists, the institutions and governments they serve – and democracy itself.
