Current information

State of server: System Ultra*Net has gone through numerous changes. An application server was installed and all system is running in two computers. An installation of new software of Ultra*Net server has gone too. It follows some changes for users of Ultra*Net. Firstly is necessary to change (reload) lmhosts file. In next step is possible to install new client 4.00.101 version. Connection by WWW is possible too. We do apologize for potential troubles, but previous version didn´t provides reliable connection.

Gaining of user name

Access is provided only to workers of institutes of AS CR. You have to inform an administrator of Ultra*Net (ultranet@lib.cas.cz) about next data:

  • name of institute of AS CR
  • name of worker (possibly phone number, certainly e-mail)
  • desired number of accesses for institute
  • You ´ll receive relevant number of user´s names by e-mail

Access to CD-ROM databases

A real access to compact discs exhibited on CD server is realised by Ultra*Net Client program or by WWW browser (next)

Access by WWW browser

Necessary modifications:

Internet Explorer 3.x or higher:
No modifications.

Netscape 4.0 or higher:

It is necessary to load NPUltra.dll file to directory:... \Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins\
during the first connection.

User´s interface and control is the same in both plug-ins - as in a case of access by Ultra*Net Client program.(see Overview of main functions). Correct registering to Microsoft net and existence of lmhost file is necessary for using of WWW client. (see below).

An address of server is:

http://ultranet.lib.cas.cz/ultraweb

Access by Client

  Ultra*Net Client 4.00.101 and NPUltra.dll (1.2 MB)

Create a directory C:\ULTRA2 in your computer - load UltranetClient.exe program and NPUltra.dll to it. Make sure that in directory:

C:\WINDOWS*

exists lmhosts file (without suffix) including rows:
147.231.62.141    ultranet #PRE
147.231.62.241    ultranet_II #PRE

If not, create it (or load it lmhosts.zip), restart computer and then start Ultra*Net Client program.

Note.: if you use older version of Ultra*Net Client, is necessary to delete manually from files:

C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT a C:\CONFIG.SYS all rows relevant to Ultra*Net (marked) and restart computer. An older version of Ultra*Net Client 2.06 is here for users working with Windows 3.11.

Overview of main functions:

The first icon (yellow key) is for connecting to CD server. Fill out an enrolment window.

Proces of enrollment to server shoud be simplified, if you run UltranetClient program with parametres. See picture below:

  • push right mouse button on Ultraclient.exe icon and choose alternative Create shortcut. (Created shortcut should be placed on desktop for easy access).
  • push right mouse button on Ultraclient.exe shortcut and choose Properties.
  • in bookmark Shortcut and in the field Target fill:

(Complete list of parametres should be found in menu Help, under item Commandline Parameter.)

A menu will appear after successful connection - list of all accessible CD-ROM titles. Short description will appear in a bottom part of window if you mark some of them. You can start to work with CD title by double-click, or pressing Start Application button.

Notes to operation

All databases needs an installation of its own searching software to local discs of clients. This software will be installed at the first access to database. Each database creates its own directory in a path C:\ULTRA2\CDROM. Thanks to it, the first access to each database is a little bit long-winded.

•  Real work with CD-ROM is running on the net protocol NetBEUI - it is necessary to correctly enroll to Microsoft net (you must not press Cancel button).

•  In C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory has to be ctl3dv2.dll file.

•  If "Low system devices" note appears, add next row to CONFIG.SYS file
  shell=c:\windows\command\command.com /E:1024

•  Directories created by individual databases are usually 5-20MB large. If you don´t have enough free space, you can delete directory with some database.

•  Attention for users of mediavelical databases (users with access to SPECIAL directory): for successful start of database is necessary to have sufficient amount of free disc units.

Present problems

Unfortunately some problems was found.
Although a language is set to english, a new client runs in german language in some cases. To solve this problem you should delete Ultra* key in register (HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software).
