2004 Prague Meetings on Macromolecules

66th meeting - 43rd microsymposium

POLYMER BIOMATERIALS: BIOMIMETIC AND BIOANALOGOUS SYSTEMS

PRAGUE, 11 - 15th JULY 2004

Microsymposium Chairman: František Rypáček

INVITATION

The organizers of the meeting cordially invite you to Prague in the second week of July, 2004. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a beautiful historic city that regained much of its old beauty and cultural charm in recent years. The present meeting, already the 66th in the series, continues in the tradition of Prague Meetings on Macromolecules, organized since 1967.

SCOPE

The 43rd microsymposium is aimed at bringing together experts with various backgrounds, both from academia and industry, who wish to benefit from combining approaches of polymer chemistry, surface chemistry, and materials science on one hand and biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and medicine on the other.

Through incorporation of biomimetic structures in synthetic polymers and their surfaces, new advanced biomaterials for biology and medicine can be developed and, vice versa, by using bioanalogous processes and biosynthetic pathways, unique polymers and polymer materials can be produced, applicable not only in biomedical but also in various other fields.

TOPICS

  1. Chemistry, physics and biology of biomimetic structures on polymer surfaces and their interactions with biomolecules, cells and components of living tissues. Molecular recognition, surface patterning, biofunctional assemblies, biosensing and biohybrid systems.
  2. Polymer biomaterials as scaffolds for cell therapy, tissue regeneration and tissue engineering. Synthesis, processing and functionalization.
  3. Bioanalogus processes in the synthesis of polymers and development of bioanalogous polymer systems.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

MAIN LECTURES

The following distinguished scientists already agreed to present main lectures:

SPECIAL LECTURES

About 18 - 24 special lectures (20 min each, additional 5 min for discussion) are planned to be presented at the Microsymposium.

If you wish to present a special lecture, please submit a brief summary with the preliminary registration card to the P.M.M. Secretariat by 31st December 2003. In January 2004, the Microsymposium Programme Committee will inform the authors whether their lectures have been accepted. Both special speakers selected by the Programme Committee and all the other participants can present their contributions as poster communications.

POSTER COMMUNICATIONS

Two poster sessions are planned (75-100 minutes each). The number of posters is not limited. Detailed information on the format of posters will be given in the Second Circular.

PUBLICATION

Summaries of invited main lectures, special lectures, and poster communications will appear in the Programme Booklet. Full texts of main and special lectures will be published in a special volume of Biomacromolecules.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Sessions:

All sessions of the meeting will take place in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Heyrovského nám. 2, Praha 6.

Registration:

Full information and final registration form will be included in the Second Circular to be sent out before 1st February 2004 to all those who will preregister for the Meeting by returning the attached preliminary registration card or by the WWW form by 31st December 2003. The WWW form is available at http://www.imc.cas.cz/sympo/g43ms.htm

Registration Fees:

(approximate, including lunches): full fee 450 EUR, student fee 250 EUR, accompanying person fee 300 EUR. Payment of fees should be made along with the final registration form submission.

Financial support:

Doctoral students currently registered at university have to provide their student status by sending an official statement from their university via airmail. The organizing committee will provide some support (fee reduction, partial granting) to a limited number of participants.

Social Events:

All participants are invited to take part in social events to be specified in the Second Circular. A special programme will be arranged for registered accompanying persons.

Accommodation:

There are plenty of hotels in Prague. Those who wish a hotel accommodation are encouraged to make their own reservation sufficiently in advance.

A modest accommodation will be available in a student dormitory within easy reach from the Institute by walk or by public transport. The accommodation is not included in any registration fee.

Visas:

A valid passport is required for entry into the Czech Republic. Visas are not required from participants from the countries, which have a visa-free agreement with the Czech Republic (their official list can be found at URL http://www.czechembassy.org/wwwo/mzv/default.asp?id=7338&ido=7306&idj=2&amb=1).. For those who need visa, the visas are generally valid for three months from the date of issue; please note that your visa must be valid until the end of your stay in the Czech Republic.

IUPAC sponsorship implies that entry visas will be granted to all bona fide scientists provided application is made not less than three months in advance. If a visa is not granted one month before the meeting, the applicant should notify the IUPAC Secretariat without delay by the applicant.
