The article discusses existing approaches to the definition of urban and rural population for the pourposes of the analysis of population diferentiation in the territory. It presents a work-commuting based classification defining urban, suburban and rural population. It enables to refine the definiton of non-urban areas to those closely connected to urban centres and more remote ones where a different dynamics of population could be expected.
