University education

Graduated from the Faculty of Sciences, Charles University, Prague in 1960.
He attained the CSc. degree (equivalent of Ph.D.) in 1967, the DrSc. degree in 1990 from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague.

Employment history

· 1960 - 1963: Regional Station of Public Health, Pardubice
· 1963 - till present: Institute of Parasitology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

· Achievements and Awards:
· Awards of the Scientific Board of Biology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1968, 1970, 1976, 1981, 1983); Prize of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1985); Medal of the J.E. Purkyně (1987). Thirteen newly described taxa of mites, ticks and insects were dedicated to him.

Research experience and stays abroad

From 1959 to 1979 he dealt mostly with taxonomy and ecology of mites and ticks of medical and veterinary importance, with specialisation in parasitic mites of bats (Chirptera). He described 94 new taxa of parasitic mites and ticks. Since 1980 he has been concerned mostly with population variability and pheromonal communication of ticks and immunology of tick feeding.
He worked repeatedly as a principal investigator of the Institute of Zoology, Cuban Academy of Sciences, Havana, Cuba (1966, 1979, 1984, 1985), and participated in the field expeditions to Bulgaria (1968), Afghanistan (1976) and Uganda (1978).

Other activities

· Committee member and Secretary (1969 - 1992) and Vice-president (1992 - 1995) of the Czechoslovak Society of Parasitologists.
· Member: Editorial Board of the International Journal of Acarology (till present), Editorial Board of Folia Parasitologica (1986 - 1999), Editorial Board of the Journal of Medical Entomology (1988 - 1990), Executive Committee of the International Congress of Acarology (1986 - 1994).
· Member of the Council for International Affairs of the A.S.C.R.(1994-2003). Member of the Czech Commission for UNESCO (1995-2003).
