The purpose of this networking activity is to gather people active in SONS projects related to polymer research and to set a frame for presenting results obtained within these projects, share general ideas on self-organization of amphiphilic polymers, review the state of the art in this discipline and promote the cooperation of various scientists taking part in these activities.
While this meeting is intended as a forum especially for members of the projects AMPHI, SONS-AMPHI and NEDSPE, it is open to participants of other SONS projects who feel that their field of activity is related or complementary to the topic of the workshop.

Technological advances in many scientific areas lead to investigation, understanding and exploiting of structures of continually smaller dimensions. Due to a large variety of building blocks, chemical reactions and architectures, polymers represent a particularly rich field where self-organization can be exploited to obtain materials with new properties. The purpose of this networking activity is to gather people already active in SONS projects related to polymer research, in particular members of the projects AMPHI, SONS-AMPHI and NEDSPE, and to set a frame for presenting results obtained within these projects, share general ideas on self-organization of amphiphilic polymers and promote the cooperation of various scientists taking part in these activities.
The meeting will thus offer a forum for people active in complementary areas of polymer research, namely in the field of hierarchical self-assembly of ionic/non-ionic amphiphilic macromolecules both in aqueous solution and at interfaces, in the field of self-organization of amphiphilic copolymers with ionizable groups usable as model polymers for conducting membranes and in the field of fabrication of nanoobjects with dedicated shape, size and properties on the base of synthetic polyelectrolytes using a single molecule templating methodology.
A common aspect of all these efforts is self-organization in amphiphilic polymer systems containing ionic groups that the individual researchers and working groups exploit in order to reach a particular technical application or to acquire understanding of the underlying physical and physico-chemical principles that are always required to lay solid grounds for a particular practical application.
The aim of the proposed workshop is a comprehensive interdisciplinary review of the current status of the subject and discussion of the most challenging problems and links between fundamental research and the nano-technological applications involving ion-containing polymers. The main subjects approached will be the following:
We expect that the workshop will strengthen the cooperation between the partners in the three projects that was already well noticeable at the 2005 ESF-sponsored workshop between the partners in Arcachon. This will be the last ESF-sponsored meeting of the current partners of the three SONS projects and it is expected that based on the positive experience gained within this framework their cooperation will continue in the future.
The ESF sponsorship of this event will make it possible to cover travel and local expenses of 2 participants from each research group participating to the projects AMPHI, SONS-AMPHI, NEDSPE. The ESF support is calculated based on accommodation for 3 nights, meals for 3 days and with an estimated average cost of air tickets within Europe. While the organizers will make every effort to fully use the allocated budget, it may happen that in cases with high transportation costs full reimbursement will not be possible. It is therefore essential to make early flight bookings to keep the transportation costs at an economic level. More participants from each group are welcome as well as participants from other SONS projects. These additional participants will have to cover their expenses. There is no registration fee for this workshop.
The program of the meeting is being prepared so as to have on average 2 oral presentations from each group participating to these projects. In addition there will be one poster session.
