Research priorities

Empirical data from observations and experiments supplemented by simulation modelling are used to investigate important questions of evolutionary biology of populations, such as (model organisms given in parentheses):

  • hybrid zones as barriers against gene flow and their role in speciation (Mus, Sorex, Triturus)
  • study of factors affecting population structure (Rhodeus, Pipistrellus, Praomys, Rattus)
  • links between life history traits, adaptive genetic variation and population dynamics in small mammals (Arvicolinae)
  • phylogeography and reconstruction of historical colonization (Mustela, Clethrionomys, Microtus, Praomys)
  • mating systems, analysis of reproductive success by using DNA markers (Apodemus, Rhodeus, Carpodacus)
  • conservation genetics of vertebrates, development of non-invasive techniques of DNA sampling (Lutra, Rupicapra, Tetrao, Spermophilus)
  • immunogenetics of wild living vertebrates - links between genetic variation and fitness (Mus, Carpodacus, Rhodeus, Perdix)
  • mechanisms and evolution of thermal physiology traits in ectotherms (Triturus)
  • functional approaches in studying morphological adaptations (Zootoca, Triturus)
