The BrainSynch project: Large scale interactions in brain networks and their breakdown in brain diseases
Main objectives
The main objective of the BrainSynch project is to understand how neuronal assemblies exchange information and how variability in neuronal communication explains variability in behaviour in the healthy and injured brain.
Neural communication exists not only on a local scale but also on a larger scale: between brain areas. The project focuses on large-scale interactions that are captured by two potentially related temporal scales:
- slow (~0.1 Hz) fluctuations of the BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) signal
- fast (1-150 Hz) neuronal oscillations that can be measured using different modalities (EEG, local field potentials, multi-unit activity, magnetoencephalography, etc.)
Focus of NDW
Our workgroup will focus on the following tasks:
- Methods and algorithms for clustering fMRI BOLD, LFP and iEEG signals
- Development/testing/apps. of methods for clustering fMRI BOLD signals
- Computing instantaneous phase
- Measures of association and dependence for fMRI signals
- Clustering approaches for large-scale interaction data
- Directionality analysis in broadband signals
- Lienar vs. Nonlinear approaches
- Detecting oscillations in broadband signals
- Phase dynamics analysis and band-specific signal analysis
