The Institute was founded in 1990 by separating several genetically oriented teams from the Institute of Experimental Botany in Prague. It was integrated into the Biology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 2006. Research activities of the IPMB range from plant molecular biology to ecological studies; main subjects include genetic engineering of plants, molecular genetics and diagnosis of plant viruses and viroids, and biophysics and physiology of photosynthesis. The IPMB has established collaborative contacts with agricultural research institutions of this country and contributes significantly to plant biotechnology programs. It also participates in several projects with long-term international links and provides theoretical and practical training in plant molecular biology.
