Behaviour of Multiphase Systems under Super-ambient Conditions

Chemical engineering is the discipline of critical importance for achieving, through technological development, main goals of the programme Competitive and Sustainable Growth in chemical industry. The interdisciplinary Research Centre for "Behaviour of multiphase systems under super-ambient conditions" integrates physical chemists and chemical engineers to study and develop new processes based on gas-liquid-solid contacting. Such processes are very frequent in chemical industry, as well as in the pharmaceutical, food, oil, gas, and steel industry. In order to achieve savings and/or preservation of the environment, they are often run under super-ambient conditions that are not covered by the present technological knowledge. This gives rise to the need for their fundamental research.

The Centre has been established in view of significant reorientation and transformation of the R&D potential towards the advanced fields of multiphase systems under extreme conditions, namely to thermodynamic systems at high pressures and temperatures, to bubble processes in metallurgy and to hydrodynamics of rheologically complex systems. The reorientation demands further intensification and integration of all the existing contacts and links of the Centre with academia and industry in Europe. As a result of networking activities, the interdisciplinary consortia within European Research Area are expected to be established with the aim to submit proposals to 6th Framework Programme.

The Research Centre BEMUSAC formally consists of two Departments, namely the Department of Multiphase Reactors and the E. Hala Laboratory of Thermodynamics ; it also includes the Supercritical Fluid Extraction Group from the Department of Separation Processes .

The project of the Research Center was submitted within the 5th RTD Framework Programme under the EU call QoL./Growth/EESD-2001-INTEGR as BEMUSAC-NAS2 Ref. G1MA-CT-2002-04019 and was approved for four-year funding from December 2002.
