Gas-Phase Chemistry


The intention of the group for gas-phase chemistry at the IOCB is to serve as one of the points of linkage between the synthetic and biological groups of the Institute on the one hand and the theoretically oriented scientists on the other. Specifically, the Gas-phase Chemistry Group conducts all kinds of experimental studies in the field of organic and inorganic ion chemistry, ranging from fundamental studies of the energetics of diatomic molecules over the wide area of organic chemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, and transition-metal catalysis all the way to enzyme models or even atmospheric field studies. To this end, contemporary mass-spectrometric methods are applied in conjunction with sophisticated isotope labeling studies, ion spectroscopy, and state-of-the-art computational investigations. The Scheme below shows how gas-phase chemistry can contribute to catalyst research by providing guidelines and strategies for future improvement of catalyst performance and prevention of side reactions.

Gas-phase Chemistry Group

The results of the research are published in leading scientific journals, and the group is recognized as one of the leading research teams in the field, as demonstrated by invitations to reviews and feature articles as well as plenary lectures. Connections to applied chemistry evolve from many aspects of the research topics and are reflected in consulting requests of chemical companies such as Arkema, Bayer, BASF, or Nestlé.

In addition, the group aims towards the improvement of the public understanding of sciences and according actively participates in measures to communicate and explain the fundamental research conducted in the group to a broader audience, including not only interested adults, but also scholars and kids.
