Subject of research

Electrorheological fluid systems are used as active coupling media in stress transfer devices (dampers, clutches, etc.). When subjected to an electric field, the organization of molecular or particular structure of the fluid systems is instantaneously and reversibly affected enabling the control of a mechanical signal transfer. The macroscopic changes of the systems are a rigid body behaviour below the yield stress limit, increase or decrease of the apparent viscosity in flow, viscoelasticity and thixotropy. Description of the mechanism of the rearrangement of induced organization and its effect on macroscopic rheological properties will be determined in a way to represent observed generic physical features. The experiments will be carried out within the framework of many years standing cooperation with the Laboratory of Rheology of the Yamagata University in Japan. The results may improve the control of the performance of electrorheological fluid systems in stress transfer devices.
