Narozen 1942, v roce 1965 absolvoval studium na Fakultě jaderné a fyzikálně inženýrské ČVUT ve specializaci matematická teorie. V roce 1968 obdržel od MFF UK vědeckou hodnost CSc v oboru teorie pravděpodobnosti a matematická statistika a v roce 1990 od téže fakulty hodnost DrSc v oboru matematická informatika. Od roku 1991 održel 6 vlastních výzkumných grantů od AV ČR, 4 další od GA ČR a po jednom výzkumném grantu od Europské unie (Copernicus) a Natinal Science Foundation of USA. Na několika dalších grantech byl spoluřešitelem. Od roku 1990 je člen a od roku 2001 Fellow prestižního IEEE. Po roce 1990 byl členem vědeckých rad ÚTIA AV ČR, Ústavu informatiky AV ČR, FEL ČVUT a FJFI ČVUT, v současné době je členem Rady pracoviště ÚTIA AV ČR. Od roku 1968 s určitou přestávkou přednášel teorii informace a teorii pravděpodobnosti na ČVUT. Byl vedoucím domácích i zahraničních diplomových prací a vychoval několik úspešných doktorandů. Po roce 1989 jako pozvaný „visiting profesor“ působil na

- Université de Montpellier II a
- Miguel Hérnadez Universidad Elche (Alicante) .
Další univerzity v Europě a USA navštívil v rámci společných výzkumných programů. V uvedeném období byl taktéž členem programových výborů některých mezinárodních vědeckých vědeckých akcí, například Symposií Prague Stochastics, Symposií IEEE o teorii informace a přednáškových cyklů Europského matematického Banachova centra ve Varšavě. Je předsedou jedné komise pro Státní závěřečné zkoušky na FJFI a místopředsedou Oborové rady pro doktorské studium matematického inženýrství na této fakultě. Je autorem nebo spoluautorem 4 monografií, více než 100 prací v mezinárodních impaktovaných časopisech a má přes 300 oficiálně registrovaných citací. Jeho práce byla oceněna například Cenou ČSAV, Cenou Jacoba Wolfowitze, Medailí FJFI prvního stupně za zásluhy o rozvoj fakulty a několika výročními cenami ředitele ÚTIA za nejlepší vědeckou práci ústavu, naposledy za rok 2007.

Born in 1942. In 1965 graduated at the MSc level from the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FJFI) of the Czech Technical University (ČVUT) in the specialization Mathematical Theory. In 1968 obtained from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University the PhD degree in the Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics and in 1990 from the same faculty the Doctor of Science degree in the Matematical Informatics. Since 1991 obtained 6 reserach grants from the AS CR, 4 others from the Czech National Grant Agency, and by one from the European Union (Copernicus) and NSF of the USA. On several other grants he participated as a co-inversigator. Since 1990 he is a Member and since 2001 Fellow of the IEEE. After 1990 he served as a meber of the Scientific Boards of the ÚTIA, Institute of Computer Science of AS CR, FJFI and of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering ČVUT. Now he is a member of the Board of ÚTIA. He was or is the Co-Editor of

Since 1968, with a certain break, he lectures the information and probability theories at the ČVUT. At home as well as abroad he supervised diploma projects and educated several PhD students. After 1989 he served as an invited visiting profesor at the
- Catholic Universiteit Leuven,
- Complutense Universidad Madrid,
- Université de Montpellier II and
- Miguel Hérnadez Universidad Elche (Alicante).
Other universities in the USA and Europe he visited in the framework of joint research programs. He served also as a member of program commitees of some international scientific enterprises, e.g. of the Prague Stochastics Symposia, Symposia of the IEEE on Information Theory, and the symposia of the European Mathematical Banach Center in Warsaw. He chairs a Committee for the Final State Exams at the FJFI and vice-chairs the Board for Doctoral Studies at the same faculty. He is an author or co-author of 4 monographs, more than 100 publications in the impacted interanational journals and has more than 300 officially registered citations. His work was awarded e.g. by the Prize of the Academy of Sciences, Prize of Jacob Wolfowitz, Medal of the merits of the first degree from the FJFI and by several Annual prizes of the Director of ÚTIA for the best paper of the Institute, the last one for the 2007.
