LIBLICE CONFERENCES ON THE STATISTICAL MECHANICS OF LIQUIDS
The Liblice Conferences on the Statistical Mechanics of Liquids are unique meetings held on the European Continent devoted both to basic research and to the application of molecular-based theories of liquids. They started in 1983 on a modest scale but have gradually grown into big meetings with about 120 participants from all over the world. The name of the meetings is derived from the site where the first meeting was held: stately manor Liblice, the official congress center of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
Whereas the first three conferences were officially organized under the auspices of the Chemical Physics Section of the Czechoslovak Chemical Society, the following meetings were organized jointly by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Cornell University, represented by Ivo Nezbeda and Keith Gubbins, respectively.
The goal of the meetings is to provide an effective forum for contacts and for the exchange of ideas, with emphasis on discussions rather than on formal presentations. The meetings are intended to give a clear picture of the achievements and challenges in both theoretical and applied aspects of the discipline.
The conference program covers the traditional topics,
- molecular simulation: new methodologies and applications
- theoretical developments (perturbation theories, integral equations)
- specific systems and models (e.g. ionic and polar liquids, associated liquids and aqueous solutions inhomogeneous fluids, complex systems, etc.)
- application of molecular-based methods to real liquids
but is otherwise quite flexible to reflect the development of the field and demands of industry. As a rule, one or two microsimposia on hot topics are held within the meeting.
All meetings follow the same format established by the first conference. As a rule, the conference is held outside built-up areas, preferably in a mountain or countyside resort. The meeting begins on Sunday evening by an invited talk followed by a social mixer. Scientific program begins on Monday morning and there are only morning and evening sessions, with afternoons devoted to various social and/or outdoor activities. On Wednesday afternoon there is an organized sightseeing tour to an interesting site reachable from the conference venue; Conference banquet takes place on Thursday evening. For accompanying persons there are full-day programs from Monday through Thursday that include also a guided sightseeing tour to Prague.
