Masaryk University was established in 1919, not long after the creation of the independent Czechoslovak state. It is the second university established in the Czech lands (after Charles Universiy in Prague), and is named after President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, who stressed the need for the widest possible variety in scientific and scholarly life for academic learning to truly exceed. During the communist period, the university was named the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Brno, but was returned to its original name in 1990 after the Czechoslovak velvet revolution. In 1997, the Faculty of Social Studies was founded. Research activities have expanded greatly, as has international cooperation. Within the Czech tertiary education sector, Masaryk University has quickly regained the position it enjoyed in the period between the two world wars.
