Exemplary observational run in 700mm camera
1. Login on the computer alhena
as tcsuser
and start XWindows.
2. Start the observational user interface via the command observe and confirm
that none graphical application is running (Netscape, xv, gimp etc. - they may be started later
than the observational user interface.)
The user interface consist of four windows (Bias CCD Control, Bias CCD Status, Coude Spectrograph and Sao Image for Bias)
Remark on the slit of the spectrograph: The slit is permanently opened up to 17mm, so don't be disoriented if the Coude Spectrograph window depicts zero slit width.
Now, we summarize the most important commands of the BIAS as they follows during the typical observational run.
observer Slechta, Fuchs
- identification of observers. Blank letter is allowed, maximally 20 letters.
run halfa
- pre-definition of values (grating angle, number of dichroic mirror and spectral
filter, exposure time of flat field and comparison spectra) for Hα region.
Available pre-defining scripts are:
script | Grating Angle | Spectral Range | Dich. Mirror & | Exposure Time |
---|---|---|---|---|
o ' | (Å) | Spectral Filter | FF/Thar | |
halfa | 30:15 | 6261 - 6773 | 1/1 | 10/40 |
hbeta | 38:45 | 4755 - 5007 | 2/5 | 100/100 |
hgama | 36:10 | 4271 - 4525 | 2/5 | 250/250 |
infra | 36:00 | 8477 - 8985 | 2/3 | 15/100 |
NaD | 28:40 | 5640 - 6153 | 1/1 | 10/40 |
theta2tau | 41:00 | 5170 - 5420 | 2/5 | 100/100 |
mgii | 36:45 | 4381 - 4634 | 2/5 | 100/100 |
europium | 34:58 | 4042 - 4296 | 2/5 | 250/250 |
comp
- the command securing the comparison spectrum; we use the Thorium - Argon lamp.
It is not necessary to fill in the exposure time if we have used any mentioned script. Otherwise
we write comp⊔40
.
object gamma Cas
- notation of the object to be exposed. Blank letters are allowed.
exp 15
- exposure time in seconds.
addtime 20
- add time in seconds. Final exposure time thus will be 35 seconds. It is possible
to put negative number in order to shorten the exposure time.
Using the exposuremeter:
pexp 5.0
- the total signal to be accumulated in exposuremeter is adjusted to 5 Megacounts.
The chip is read out when the signal exceeds this value.
exp -e
- starting the exposition. The end of exposition is driven by the signal of
exposuremeter instead of time.
readout
- end of exposition; the spectrum will be saved.
abort
- end of exposition; the file will not be saved and spectrum will be lost.
mflat 10 5
- 5 flat fields will be exposed; exposure time of each flat is 10 seconds.
The exposure time is the obligatory parameter independently on auxiliary scripts (halfa,
europium
etc. - see table)
We recommend to use mflat
command instead of many flat
because the flat field lamp shines continuously and all flats are more stable.
mzero 0 5
- five zeros is exposed. The first parameter (i.e. 0) denotes the exposure time
as the auxiliary parameter The second parameter denotes the number of files to be exposed.
(see also mflat
command).
exit
- end of observation.
For example, observational run in Septermber 27/28th, 2003 was following:
