Glassmaking from prehistory to the Middle Ages: cultural and technological transformations

Co-ordinator: Natalie Venclová; co-operators of the project: Černá, E. (ÚAPPSZČ Most), Gedeon, O. (VŠCHT Praha); co-operators: Tomková, K., Mařík, J., Hulínský, V.; (GA AV ČR) 2009-2011

Glass and glassmaking residues of the prehistory and Middle Ages are relatively well archaeologically recorded in Bohemia, but the information relating to the glass technologies is fragmentary. The project offers, for the first time in Bohemia and beyond, to elaborate a continuous chronological sequence of glass technologies according to the chemical analyses, accompanied by archaeological and historical evaluation. The project will be conducted in a collaboration of glass specialists both from the fields of archaeology and chemical technology. A unique output is proposed – an online web application presenting all analyses of archaeological glass conducted during the project and earlier, accessible on the web. The database will be actualised continually in the future.
