In contrast to common structural materials used for their mechanical properties, functional engineering materials are utilized in modern industrial applications because they exhibit unique functional properties either intrinsically existing in them or artificially created.
Functional materials and composites are capable of introducing of mechanical motion in engineering devices of the size from micrometers to meters. This behaviour results from nphysical principles existing naturally in materialssuch as electrically activated piezoelectric, ferroelectric materials, electroactive polymers and composites, thermally activated shape memory alloys, magnetostrictive materials and magnetic shape memory alloys responding to an applied magnetic field.
Functional materials and composites are often prepared and used in form of thin films and coatings. Free-standing thin films are structured using lithography and applied in microsystems.
Applied research and development in the field of functional materials and composites often benefits from application of various non-destructive methods of material characterization. These methods allow in-situ studies of material processes during activation without interfering functional responses.
