The Institute was created from the Laboratory for Gas Analysis of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science founded in 1956 and reorganised in 1966 to form the Institute of Instrumental Analytical Chemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In 1974, the name of the Institute was changed to the Institute of Analytical Chemistry.

The main work of the Institute is concerned with the methodology of capillary separation methods in analytical chemistry. Specific research subjects are related to biopolymers (proteomics), chiral substances, trace elements and the environment. Separation techniques developed at the Institute include electromigration methods (isotachophoresis, zone electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing), field-flow fractionation, liquid chromatography and supercritical fluid extraction and chromatography. In addition to the separation methods, the Institute carries out work on analytical applications of some spectral methods including atomic emission spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry and mass spectrometry.
