Pursuant to Act No. 341/2005 Coll., the Institute became a public research institution as of 1 January 2007.

The task of the Institute is to pursue basic scientific research in the area of animal physiology and genetics, especially investigating physiological functions, genetic structures and interactions in the vertebrate genome. Of special importance is research on species/populations important in biomedicine (model species), biodiversity (protected or other valued species) and/or in agriculture (farm animals) also with respect to food quality and safety. All areas of animal physiology and genetics are interrelated through a mutual methodology, joint instrumental equipment and unique animal models clearly oriented to selected issues in medicine, biodiversity and agriculture. All activities result in the production of priority scientific results in the basic research area but also in a continuing effort to apply the knowledge thus obtained to related areas of the national economy and practice. IAPG fosters and is involved in international scientific collaboration, training of young scientists, and other forms of education.
