The building, which was built in 1960-1964 according to the project by Karel Prager, is the first building of this type in the Czech Republic, and therefore it was added into a list of cultural monuments (by the decision of Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republiky from 24.5.2000).

Professor Otto Wichterle, founder of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, was one of the most significant Czech chemists. The local authorities in Prague 6 district therefore decided to establish the monument to Otto Wichterle in front of the building of his institute. The ceremonial laying the foundation stone of the monument took place on the 90th birthday of Otto Wichterle - 27th October 2003.
The local authorities of Prague 6 district announced the contest for the monument, in which a sculpture by Michal Gabriel, Oleg Haman and Jana Podpěrová won. Unveiling of the monument took place on 31st October 2005. During the ceremony, a medal was presented to Dr. Linda Wichterlová by Assoc. Prof. Jiří Nedoma. The Walter J. Zable Medal for Excellence in Technology of the International Technology Institute, San Diego, California (USA) was awarded in memoriam to Professor Wichterle for his life work.
