Intense Radiation Sources and Radiation–Matter Interaction

For the proposed research our unique experimental base of high power lasers will be exploited and further upgraded, which consists of a pulsed terawatt iodine photodissociation laser, of a 10–GW hybrid solid state–iodine laser, of laser–pumped plasma XUV lasers, and of a chemical oxygen–iodine laser (COIL). We intend to reach the multiterawatt output power level by OPCPA upgrades of the pulsed iodine lasers. Focused laser beams will be exploited for basic research of nonlinear processes accompanying the interaction of radiation with matter at very high energy densities, at extreme temperatures, densities and pressures, suitable e.g. for studies of radiation–induced ablation and for laboratory astrophysical experiments. The accumulated knowledge will be used at development of advanced laser sources of both non–coherent and coherent XUV radiation and of highly charged ions, and of new applications e.g. in nanotechnologies. The COIL development will aim at industrial applications as well.
