The Institute was formed in 1972 as the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences through the merger of the Institute of Polarography which was founded in 1950 and became a part of the CSAS in 1953, and the Institute of Physical Chemistry established in 1955 from the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry founded in the CSAS in 1953. Its current name was adopted in 1993.
The Institute carries out research in physical chemistry and chemical physics focusing on the relationship between the structure and reactivity of matter.
The research activities concentrate mainly on theoretical and experimental investigations of chemical and physico-chemical processes at atomic or molecular level (structure and dynamics of matter, reaction mechanism) in the gaseous, liquid and solid phases and at their interfaces, in particular in systems relevant to catalysis, sorption, and electrochemical and biological processes (including the preparation and characterization of new catalytic, sorption, electrode and other special materials).
