TopicState diagrams hydrophilic polymers at low temperature
AnnotationOne of techniques of preparing porous polymer gels is cryo-tropic gelation. Gel morphology is evaluated by means of cryo-microscopic methods. Knowledge of phase behaviour of hydrophilic and amphiphilic gels containing different amount of solvent (water, organic solvent) is necessary both for their preparation and for interpretation of morphology. The dissertation will study phase transitions of hydrophilic and amphiphilic polymer gels (and their soluble analogues) containing water or an organic solvent at low temperatures. The disertation objective is (i) to determine state diagrams of the systems polymer/solvent and (ii) to elucidate the effect of rate of solvent crystallization and rates of transitions in these systems on the structure of frozen solutions. State diagrams and the dynamics of phase transitions are going to be studied by differential scanning calorimetry and morpology by low and high vaccuum electron microscopy.
