TopicFunctional polymer brushes capable of preventing non-specific protein deposition
AnnotationDeposition of proteins from complex biological media, such as, blood plasma, serum, cell cultivation media, cell suspensions, or tissue extracts makes serious troubles for applications of artificial materials in biotechnologies and medicine. The aim of the work is the development of anti-fouling polymer layers which prevent protein adsorption and contain reactive chemical groups for covalent attachment of biologically active molecules. The layers will be synthesized as polymer brushes using controlled radical polymerization (ATRP, ARGET) of various hydrophilic acrylates, methacrylates, acrylamides, and methacrylamides initiated by reagents immobilized on surface of various substrates. IR reflection spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and AFM will be used for characterization of the layers. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) will be used to observe their interaction with the biological fluids. Selected layers will be applied for preparation of biosensors and micro- and nano-particles in collaboration with biological and medical research teams. Continuation of the research is included in the program of Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre of Academy of Sciences CR and Charles University, Prague
