TopicOptimization of polymer stabilization systems protecting polymers against weathering based on better understanding heterogeneity of polymer degradation processes.
AnnotationThe theme is expected to contribute to understanding mechanism of degradation processes in polymers that limit their medical and technical applications and to improve protection of polymers against deterioration of their mechanical and optical properties by designing more effective stabilizing systems for particular polymers and applications. Intended research will comprise preparation of stabilized polymer samples (both virgin and recycled polymers containing suitable additives) that will be subjected to accelerated degradation under model conditions. Concentration profiles of paramagnetic intermediates (nitroxides) originated in the process of stabilization activity of the hindered amine based additives during accelerated degradation will be measured by electron spin resonance imaging technique. Mechanical and optical properties of the samples together with distribution of oxidation products in the samples will be followed as well. The data will be evaluated using modern simulation and deconvolution techniques. Results will be used in designing more efficient stabilizing systems.
