Research

The research program of the Department deals with the synthesis and characterization of biodegradable and bioactive polymers, polymerization of heterocyclics, condensation polymers, functionalized polymer structures and supramolecular assemblies.

Bioactive polymers are synthesized and their properties as well as their interactions with biological systems are investigated. The studied topics include: (a) synthesis of polymers, block or graft copolymers with biodegradable backbones, such as poly(amino acid)s, poly(hydroxy acid)s and polysaccharides, polymers with functional groups and crosslinked hydrogels; (b) organized supramolecular structures of block copolymers and their characterization in solution and at solid/liquid interfaces; (c) polymers containing biologically active functional groups and their interaction with cells and tissues; (d) polymer biomaterials for tissue replacement and regeneration (tissue engineering) and drug delivery systems.

Important materials and novel (bio)environmentally degradable plastics can be based on polymers with heteroatoms in the main chain. The research includes: (a) ring-opening polymerizations of heterocyclic monomers and studies of oxidation and degradation processes in polyamides and polyesters; (b) development of new engineering materials, based on organic-inorganic nanocomposites of polyamides and polyesters.

Fluorescence-labeled polymers are synthesized and interactions of polymer molecules in solution during formation of organized supramolecular structures are studied by fluorescence techniques. Novel electroluminescent polymers for light-emitting optical devices are synthesized and investigated.
