Research

Structure and dynamics of macromolecular and model systems are studied on various levels starting from the atomic level (0.1 nm) up to that of supramacromolecular systems, polymer crystallites and microdomains in polymer blends (100 nm). The leading theme of research is mobility and order in synthetic, natural and hybrid macromolecular systems with the ultimate goal to find and explore structural factors of spontaneous self-ordering of macromolecular systems as well as conditions at which local and semilocal mobility cease to compete with the order and start to cooperate in a dynamic functional order. As a special topic in this filed, cooperative effects in the supramolecular organization of macromolecules are intensively studied.

Some of the objects of research are: supramacromolecular systems, in particular macromolecular micelles and similar objects, macromolecular complexes (e.g., of stereoregular polymers with other polymers or low-molecular-weight compounds, polyphosphates and nucleic acids with polycations and their block copolymers, HIV protease with protein inhibitors), thermoreversible gels, partially ordered polymer structures, polymer crystallites, polymer blends and hybrid polysiloxane networks. The main methods used are:

  • molecular spectroscopy: multinuclear, multiquantum 1D and 2D high-resolution and solid state NMR, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy (including confocal micro-Raman, by collaboration)
  • static and time-resolved WAXS, SAXS and SANS
  • X-ray diffraction
  • quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics (model calculations and modelling-assisted structure analysis)
