The research topics of the Department of Functional Materials are related to research, preparation and technical applications of materials and composites that are inherently capable of a mechanical action in applications ranging from meters to millimetres upon external stimuli (thermal, electrical, mechanical, light etc.) due to physical principles intrinsically present in them. For instance, we can mention thermally activated shape memory alloys or polymers, magnetically actuated alloys or electroactive polymers.
The department is further devoted to development of techniques of nanodiamond layers preparation using microwave PECVD that allows for production of functionalised nanostructured biointerfaces. Examples of applications are functional interfaces for construction of sensing devices, smart medical implants, drug delivery carriers and biophotonic systems. A key part of these developments is the SPM characterisation and modification of material surfaces on the nanoscale.
