The Functional materials department was established in January 2009 bringing together the researchers working at IP ASCR in the field of functional engineering materials and composites, nanostructured diamond coatings and nanomaterials for biointerfaces with strong potential for engineering applications.
Research groups within the department
- Functional Materials and Composites /FMC/
The research group is focused on the study, technological modifications and characterisation of functional materials, namely the shape memory alloys and polymers and electroactive polymers. Furthermore, the research involves development of applications and novel functional structures based on these advanced materials.
- Materials for Nanosystems and Biointerfaces /MNB/
The MNB group is focused on the preparation and characterisation of nanodiamond films and nanostructured magnetic composites.
- Magnetic shape memory and magnetocaloric materials /MSM/
Research of intermetalic compounds exhibiting magnetic shape memory effect (found about 1996) and magnetocaloric effects in the vicinity of room temperature.
