Graduated from the Czech Technical University, Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Prague in 1968. PhD in applied physics was obtained from the same university. Since 1974 he has been with the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague (now the Institute of Photonics and Electronics ASCR, v. v. i.), since 1978 as Head of the Dept. of Guided Wave Optics, now as Deputy Director. In 1985–86 and 1990–91 he was with the University of Dortmund where he worked in the field of integrated optics, supported by the Humboldt Foundation. In 1990 he received the DrSc. degree in electrical engineering from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Since 1993 he has lectured several subjects in bachelor, master and PhD programme at the Czech Technical University, since 2005 as professor of applied physics.
