The aim of the Laboratory of Paleobiology and Paleoecology is to gather information on geological past of the Earth with special reference to paleoecology and the dynamics of the origin, development and deterioration of biological communities. Paleobiological applications – evolution science and biostratigraphy are also studied.
Taxonomy is an indispensable tool in obtaining relevant results but not a self-contained purpose of the research. A special attention is given to the fossil record of the Czech Republic, Variscan Europe, and the region of the Alps and Carpathians, with respect to the needs of, and mutual co-operation with, other laboratories of the Institute.
The Laboratory also renders long-term stays of foreign scientists. Its results achieved are fully compatible with those of analogous scientific teams elsewhere in Europe. Institute membres participate in various international scientific projects (e.g., IGCP).
