The Association of South Moravian Institutes is formed by the Institutes located in Brno (Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Institute of Archaeology, Institute of Biophysics, Institute of Physics of Materials, Institute of Psychology, Institute of Scientific Instruments, Institute of Vertebrate Biology) as well as those which have their branches or detached units there (Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics, Institute of Art History, Institute of Botany, Institute for Contemporary History, Institute of Czech Literature, Institute of the Czech Language, Institute of Ethnology, Institute of Experimental Medicine, Institute of Geonics, Institute of History, Institute of Mathematics, Institute of Systems Biology and Ecology, Institute of Thermomechanics and Masaryk Institute – Archives).

The aim of the Association is to facilitate the exchange of information, cooperation and mutual assistance of the institutes involved, consultations on joint scientific, organisational, promotional, economic, social and technical tasks, organising of language courses, courses of research fundamentals and other courses enhancing the qualifications of employees of the Academy Institutes and universities in South Moravia. The Association also formulates and submits proposals and requests to Academy bodies, cultivates contacts with Brno and South Moravian authorities and with scientific, educational and cultural establishments in Brno and South Moravian Region. Moreover, it helps the member Institutes to be in touch with the companies and other establishments where the results of basic research can be applied, and to obtain Czech or international grants for their projects, particularly from the structural funds of the European Union. The Association represents the member Institutes towards secondary schools and universities in Brno with the object to cooperate with them in research & development as well as teaching, and informs regional media about the member Institutes and their activities.

The governing body of the Association is a Board composed of Directors of the Brno-based Institutes, Heads of Academy branches and units, and members of the Academy Council representing Brno.
