Scientific Degree "Doctor of Science"

The scientific degree "Doctor of Science" (abbreviated as DSc.) was established by a resolution of the twenty-first session of the Academy Assembly convened on 18 December 2002. It is awarded in accordance with Article 6 of the Statutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ASCR) approved by the Czech Republic Government´s Resolution No. 614 dated 24 May 2006, which reads as follows : "The Academy awards the scientific degree 'Doctor of Science' (Latin: "doctor scientiarum", abbr. DSc.) to scientists in recognition of their conspicuous scientific qualification as demonstrated by having performed outstanding and original scientific work, contributing to the further advancement of research in a specific branch of science and characterising the awardee as a scientist of recognized stature".

Procedural Guidelines for the DSc. Degree

The DSc. degree is awarded by the Council for Sciences of the ASCR in compliance with the prescribed administrative procedure (Article 42, Paragraph e of the Statutes of the ASCR). The procedure is initiated with an application for admission to candidacy for a degree. Applications shall be submitted to the Secretariat of the Council for Sciences of the ASCR (Národní 3, 117 20 Praha 1; contact person: Ivana Střálková, phone: + 420-221 403 320, Fax: +402 221 403 524, e-mail: stralkova@kav.cas.cz).

The Council for Sciences of the ASCR established the Committee for the Doctor of Science Degree as the body to ensure a high professional level and effective coordination of the awarding procedure in accordance with Paragraph 9 of its Procedural Guidelines and with Article I, Paragraph 5 of the Regulations.

The Council for Sciences of the ASCR issued the Procedural Guidelines for regulations on awarding the scientific degree DSc. The procedure for the doctor of science degree is administered by the Council for Sciences, the Committee for the Doctor of Science Degree and the respective Commissions for Defending Doctor of Science Theses. Applicants for the DSc. degree are advised to consult the requirements specific for a given Commission with the Chairperson of the respective Commission for Defending Doctor of Science Theses still before writing a doctor of science thesis. The completed doctor of science thesis must be bound.
