Research topics
Characterization of intercellular signaling pathways within neuronal-glial circuits and intracellulal signaling mechanisms in neurons and glia under physiological and pathological conditions:
- The role of glutamergic and purinergic pathways in neuronal-glial signalling in the cortex, hippocampus and spinal cord with a specific emphasis on the glial NMDA and P2X receptors;
- In vivo imaging of neuronal-glial circuits under physiological and pathophysiological conditions;
- Calcium signalling cascades in Alzheimer’s disease; the morphology and physiology of glia during normal brain ageing.
Molecular Physiology of Calcium Signalling:
- The physiology of vasopressin and oxytocin signalling in neuron-glia interactions, injury, nociception, pregnancy and lactation in the central and peripheral nervous systems;
- The physiology of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system and stimulus-secretion coupling in the neurohypophysis;
- The physiology of calcium signalling in human embryonic stem cell-derived neural precursors in the control of proliferation and differentiation.
Cellular, molecular and morphological changes in neurons and glial cells during pathological states:
- The role of ion channels/transporters in astrocytic regulatory volume processes during oxygen-glucose deprivation or hypoosmotic stress;
- The membrane properties of reactive glia and ongoing glia proliferation, cell death and glial scar formation;
- Three-dimensional reconstruction of glial cells and their morphometric analysis;
- Glial expression of TRP channels under physiological/pathological conditions
Ion channels and calcium signaling in neural stem/progenitor cells at different stages of differentiation and their functional properties after transplantation into the injured CNS:
- The role of morphogenes on the differentiation potential of neonatal neural stem/ progenitor cells;
- Differentiation of region-specific neural stem/progenitor cells after their transplantation into the ischemic brain;
- The role of glial cells in CNS regeneration
