Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) which are applied as fire retardants in everyday consumer products are a new class of toxic cotaminants. It is known that PBDE are found in waste waters and that PBDEs will also end up in the sludge The general population is targeted by the PBDEs via food chain. At present there are no widely accepted environmentally friendly and safety method for the remediation of water and/or aqueous sludges conataminated with PBDEs and their degradation kinetics is rather limited. Reductive degradation of PBDE can be considered as fundamental and safety method for solving the problem at real conditions. The project is focused on the experimental determination of the reaction pathways of reductive debromination of individual congeners of PBDE in the batch and continuous laboratory reactors. New types of bimetallic Pd /Fe (Mg) catalysts in the form of macro-, micro, and nano-particles will be synthetized and employed as reduction agents. GA104/09/0880
