CERGE-EI has an absolute charter issued by the New York State Board of Regents in the United States of America, and is fully accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth & Sports of the Czech Republic.
The Board of Regents of the Education Department of New York State, a board granting charters outside the USA, granted CERGE-EI doctoral study program in economics a provisionary charter in 2000, and after the first review CERGE-EI was granted an absolute charter in 2005. The charter confirms the high quality of the CERGE-EI Ph.D. program in economics and the fact that it meets U.S. standards for Ph.D. degree programs. The Ph.D. at CERGE-EI was the first graduate program that is part of a state-supported institution in the transition economies (and perhaps the world) to receive an absolute charter in the United States. The charter was issued after a thorough examination of the program by a distinguished site visit team who concluded that CERGE-EI was on a par with very good U.S. Ph.D. programs and that CERGE-EI fills an important and singular niche. The full report strongly recommended that the New York State Education Department award an absolute charter to the CERGE-EI Doctoral Program in Economics. The award affirms the confidence of Board of Regents in the future of CERGE-EI and the long-term sustainability of its academic programs.
