Center for Economic Research & Graduate Education - Economics Institute

MAE Students

CERGE-EI, located in the center of Prague, the Czech Republic, offers a Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics (MAE).

Upon successful completion of the program, students earn a U.S. degree that is officially recognized on a world-wide basis. By earning the MAE, students gain a degree that will bolster their careers in business, government, banking and nonprofit organizations, while achieving a solid understanding of finance, macroeconomics and microeconomics.

The MAE program has an absolute charter from the New York State Education Department in the U.S.A.

In the U.S.A. and worldwide, the degree and diploma from the CERGE-EI MAE program will be recognized as a U.S. degree and diploma.

Study program

The MAE program consists of three semesters of coursework including both required and elective courses. Through their choice of electives, students can gain one of a number of specializations within the degree program.

Studying full-time, a successful student would finish the program in 12 months.

We conduct a Preparatory Semester to give more students a chance at succeeding in the MAE program. The Preparatory Semester prepares students for the rigorous American-style learning in English that characterizes the MAE program. The Preparatory Semester is required for some students.

We also offer full faculty support if a student wishes to complete a thesis. Thesis work is in addition to the MAE program curriculum.

The MAE program is career-oriented as an applied program and it is also academically demanding. Graduates leave the program confident in the skills they have mastered through our careful attention to quality teaching.

Who is the MAE program for?

Typically, and certainly in Economics, an American “MA” degree is on a higher level than Central and Eastern European “Masters” degrees. Therefore, the MAE program can be appropriate both for Bachelors and Masters graduates from Central and Eastern Europe.

Students who have a Bachelors degree in Economics will be interested in continuing their education in a program that furthers their knowledge and dramatically improves their career prospects.

Students who have a Bachelors degree in a field other than Economics might be interested in changing their career path from what they studied for their Bachelors to a more interesting and lucrative career.

Part of the attraction for Masters graduates is the American style of education and completing the program in English, in addition to gaining an American MA degree in Applied Economics.

Students from other countries might be interested in gaining a U.S. degree for a much lower tuition than is charged in the U.S. and to do so in the city of Prague.
