Pavel Janoušek is the director of the Institute of Czech Literature of the ASCR, v. v. i. From 1975 to 1980 he studied Czech literature and art education at the Faculty of Arts Charles University; from 1978 he also studied theater and film. In 1981 he joined the Institute (at that time known as the Institute of Czech and World Literature of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences) as a doctoral candidate and subsequently earned several advanced degrees (PhDr. 1984, CSc. 1987, doc. 2003). In 1987 he was appointed research scholar, in 1990 he became head of the department of contemporary literature, and in 1993 he was named deputy director. In April 1999 he was charged with leadership of the Institute, and in the fall of that year he was named director. He has taught courses at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University since 1990. From 1999 to 2009 he also taught in the Faculty of Education Charles University, and since 2009 he has taught at DAMU (Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague). He has served on numerous scholarly advisory boards (for example, he is chair of the board for the Museum of Czech Literature), on grant commissions and on the editorial boards of journals in the Czech Republic (Česká literaturu, Divadelní revue, Tvar) and in Slovakia (Rak, Slovenská literatura). In his scholarly work he engages with Czech literature, prose and drama of the twentieth century. The four-volume series History of Czech Literature 1945–1989, for which he was series editor, received the 2008 Hlávka prize for scholarly literature published in the Czech Republic.
