The Functional materials department was established at IP ASCR as a new department in January 2009. It brought together researchers working in the field of functional engineering materials and nanostructured diamond thin films. Present activities of the department mainly include: - Functional engineering materials for smart structures and composites
- Smart textiles with NiTi shape memory alloy filaments
- Preparation and characterisation of nanodiamond thin films by plasma enhanced microwave CVD system
- Quantum chemistry of nanomaterials for bioapplications and molecular electronics
- Magnetic shape memory materials
- Advanced intermetallic alloys: casting, characterization and single crystal growth
- Engineering metallurgy with synchrotrons and neutrons
- In-situ TEM, X-ray and neutron diffraction investigations of deformation processes in materials
. News Mrs. Vlaďka Petráková, has been awarded the Young Investigator Prize for the best Oral Presentation in symposium A, Diamond Electronics and Bioelectronics: From fundamental to Applications IV, Material Research Society (MRS) Fall 2010 meeting in Boston, U.S.A. The website Roundrobin SMA modelling presenting results of an ESF S3T EUROCORES sponsored networking activity has been launched. A seminar by Christian Colliex, president of ISFM International Federation of Societies for Microscopy, entitled "EELS mapping, a key component for the exploration of the nanoworld" (see abstract) ILL Grenoble launched a press release released concerning a measurement of internal stresses in a smart cutting related to research in the field of stone cutting tools. ASM International newsletter E-elastic released featured article about the recently devoloped method a equipment for heat treatment of thin NiTi filaments by electric current Roundrobin SMA modelling organised by the department with support from S3T ESF EUROCORES programme continues. Project DEVISER (European structural funds project aimed at development of new material research infrastructure) prepared in collaboration of NPI ASCR and IP ASCR in the years 2005-10 has failed. The functional materials department organizes, together with the department of metals, the ESOMAT 2009 7-11 September 2009. -
