The delimitation of the rural space in the Czech Republic is discussed although a general consensus on a suitable typology of rural spaces doesn’t exist. The presented paper focuses on one possible approach to the typology of rural space, mentioning its methodology, data sources and partial results. The typology discriminates three major types of space: rural, suburban and urban on the basis of the intensity of commute to work to the major urban centers of the country. This methodological approach has been inspired by the French typology of urban and rural space delimitation. The typology and its relevance would be later tested on the demographic and socioeconomic data which will provide a possibility to identify the differences in the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population living in the different spatial types.
