The Institute was established in 1959 by merging two units of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences: the Department of Information Theory of the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics and the Laboratory for Automation and Telemechanics.
The Institute conducts research in cybernetics and informatics, and in the theory of systems and random processes for mathematical modelling, automatic control, optimisation, uncertainty decision-making and information processing.
